COURTESY: ISAAC CANNON - A Lincoln High School quartet will be joining the show In My Life - A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles, Oct 15 at Aladdin Theater. They are (left to right) Katie Handrick, Joanne Lee, Justin Huang and Randy Zhang. The touring show “In My Life — A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles” returns to Portland in mid-October, and the Fab Four tribute fellows will be joined on stage by another set of musicians — the Lincoln High School string quartet.

Lincoln students Justin Huang, Katie Handick, Joanne Lee and Randy Zhang will join the band for songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “Yesterday,” “A Day in the Life,” “Hello Goodbye” and “Hey Jude.”

The multimedia, time-period show is a retelling of The Beatles’ story by manager Brian Epstein, played by Murphy Martin, and features the live music of renowned tribute band Abbey Road — Chris Paul Overall (Paul), Nathaniel Bott (John), Zak Schaffer (George) and Axel Clarke (Ringo). The band uses vintage instruments.

It’ll stage on 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Aladdin Theater, 3017 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.; it was last performed in Portland in 2013. Tickets are $30 to $55 and available at www.aladdin-theater.com.

The Lincoln quartet joins in on “Yesterday” during a scene in which Paul McCartney plays the song for the first time for producer George Martin.

The four musicians already are accomplished; Lee and Handick played in the “In My Life” show on its Oregon tour in 2013 and Lee performed with Pink Martini.

“I didn’t really like the Beatles before the show, but I became a fan after listening to their music,” Lee says.

The show uses quartets to augment production, and producers contacted David Kay, Lincoln orchestra director, about musicians.

Huang (violin) also plays for Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Handick plays French horn and trumpet. Lee (cello) is part of Portland Youth Philharmonic. Zhang, the youngest of the members at 14, plays violin and viola and also is a member of ensembles at PYP and MYS.

Big volunteer day

The Portland Parks Foundation, Portland Parks & Recreation and partners are gearing up for Parke Diem 2015, the biggest citywide volunteer work party for the city’s parks. An estimated 1,000 volunteers will help with 50 projects at 45 sites — community gardens, parks, natural areas, sports fields — for a third year.

The projects take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10. See the Portland Parks Foundation’s Parklandia website (www.parklandia.org) for more information.

Maintaining community gardens, renovating and maintaining four baseball fields at Pier Park, building a set of stairs at Forest Park, and planting 10,000 crocus bulbs at Peninsula Park are among the projects. Hoyt Arboretum, 4000 S.W. Fairview Blvd., serves as host for the two days of volunteer work.
