PERILOUSLY perched POOCH

When the worried calls start coming in, Farm and Garden Store employees know Bojo is perched on the edge of the roof again.

NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: TRAVIS LOOSE - Bojo wears a pensive look on his face as he stands like a sentry atop the Farm and Garden Store on 19th Avenue in Forest Grove. He comes and goes from inside an apartment on top of the building, where he lives with store owner Derric Crowell.

Derric Crowell, who owns the store located on 19th Avenue just west of Main Street, lives in the apartment above the shop with his white American Bulldog. The apartment has a sliding door to the roof above the store — a place where people sometimes see Bojo hanging out when Crowell goes on errands.

Apparently, Bojo likes to enjoy the panoramic view.

Recently, he’s been soaking up the sun a bit more than usual.

Jesse Wong, 31, who manages the store, remembers a woman calling across the street to inform them of the dog on the roof. She was concerned that if she got too close it might jump.

“That was probably one of the funniest ones. I don’t know why she thought he was going to jump down,” Wong said. “But everybody thinks he is going to jump because he always sits at the edge. That’s why I think people freak out about it.”

That woman wasn’t the only person who has contacted the store — or, in some cases, the Forest Grove Police Department — about Bojo’s seemingly hazardous perch.

“I don’t think he’ll jump down from there,” said Wong. “I’ve been here since he was a puppy, and I think he’s 4 or 5 years old now. But it’s only been recently that he’s started going up there all the time.”

On an average day when Bojo is on the roof, the store will get at least five calls regarding the dog from drivers and walkers alike.

“A couple of our regular customers said they have been at Waltz (Brewery, across the street) and they sit back and laugh because people are on the phone trying to call us about the dog,” Wong said.

When Bojo is not on the roof, Crowell lets him roam the store — a surprising but familiar face to regulars and newcomers.
