STAGE

JAW: A Playwrights Festival

The 17th annual festival by Portland Center Stage features four new staged readings and performances by Susannah Mars and Merideth Kaye Clark, Eowyn Emerald and Dancers, The Seseisiunists, SubRosa Dance Collective, Stumptown Clown Productions and POPgoji. There’ll also be Community Artists Labs put on by JAW Festival Director Rose Riordan and playwrights that explore character creation, devised theater and directing for staged readings. The featured playwrights are Adam Szymkowicz (“Colchester”), Jen Silverman (“Wink”), Boo Killebrew (“Miller, Mississippi”) and James Presson (“Long Division”).

Comedy nights

Funny Over Everything returns to the stage, featuring headliner James Davis, as well as David Mascorro, Caitlin Weiehauser and Phil Schallberger, hosted by Sean Jordan. PDX Pop Now!

The 12th annual three-day music celebration features about 40 bands, taking place on two outdoor stages underneath the Hawthorne Bridge. There’ll also be a record fair, street fair and food carts.

Portland Soundcheck

The fourth annual event showcases Portland-based artists from all genres, sharing one stage. It’ll feature Moorea Masa, Brant Colella, Joy Pearson and the High Water Jazz Band, Harper and Reckless featuring Patrick Hammond.

Yosegaki Hinomaru

COURTESY: OBON 2015 - Rex and Keiko Ziak of Obon 2015 are surrounded by Japanese flags captured on the battlefields of WWII. These flags and the stories they carry will be part of the Yosegaki Hinomaru exhibit, opening July 25 at the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center.The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center’s new exhibition, “Yosegaki Hinomaru: Souvenir, Heirloom or Art?” features antiques from 70 years ago, when the U.S. and Japan were at war. Rex and Keiko Ziak of Obon 2015 are the curators of the exhibit.
