Here a Pick, there a Pick

Pickathon, a premier indie roots festival, takes place from Friday to Sunday, July 31 to Aug. 2, at Pendarvis Farm, 16581 S.E. Hagen Road, Happy Valley.

Musicians and bands featured include Ty Seagall, Little Freddie King, Freakwater, The Quebe Sisters, Langhorne Slim, Don Flemons (of the Carolina Chocolate Drops), DIIV, Heartless Bastards, Liz Vice, Shabazz Palaces, Summer Cannibals, Tinariwen, Whitey Morgan, Kamasi Washington and Viet Cong.

Early admission for weekend ticket holders begins at noon Thursday, July 30, and if you’re on site, you can catchy the IFC TV show “Portlandia” filming an episode, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on that day.

Tickets range from $100 for a single day to $270 for the weekend.

If you take the TriMet Green Line to Clackamas Town Center, “Eco-shuttles” can take you to the festival site. You can find a schedule at http://www.pickathon.com.

We’ll take a closer look next week at the performers, but our recommendations include the following:

• Ernest Ranglin — Guitarist and Jamaica native and guitarist Ranglin has worked in jazz, reggae, mento and ska, and played with Theophilus Beckford, Jimmy Cliff, Monty Alexander, Prince Buster, the Skatalites and Bob Marley, among others. You can hear him at 2:50 p.m. July 31 on the Meadow Stage, and at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Lucky Barn.

• Joseph — Hailing from Eastern Oregon, Natalie, Allison and Meegan Closner are Joseph, an angelic-sounding trio harmonizing on pastoral music you can hear at 3 p.m. July 31 in the Galaxy Barn and at 3:40 p.m. Aug. 2 on the Tree Line Stage.

• Tune-Yards — Indie pop, freak folk, whatever you want to call it, Tune-Yards features Merrill Garbus improvising drum loops, which she interlays with ukulele and vocals, in addition to bass played by Nate Brenner. You can hear them at 9:50 p.m. Aug. 1 on the Mountain Stage and at 7:40 p.m Aug. 2 on the Woods Stage.
