New arrival

The Oregon Zoo has welcomed a new Masai giraffe, 2-year-old Buttercup, from the Santa Barbara Zoo in California. He’s already 12 feet tall, and he’ll live in the zoo’s Africa Savanna habitat.

Masai giraffes can grow to 18 feet tall. They can have tongues 21 inches long, run up to 35 mph, and eat up to 75 pounds of leaves and brush each day.

Buttercup will be available to be seen by the pubic sometime this fall, eventually joining companions Bakari and Desi and smaller animals.

MarchFourth

The Portland band of musicians, acrobats, stilt walkers and more, and which plays two shows at Revolution Hall on Oct. 28, has released its first album of original material in five years. “Magic Number” was produced by Ben Ellman of Galactic and engineer/producer Mikael “Count” Eldridge at New Orleans’ The Parlor Recording Studio. It’s full of captivating grooves and brassy swagger, with guest appearances by Trombone Shorty and others.

The album was fan-funded through Kickstarter.

“’Magic Number’ represents a shift in the band’s musical evolution, featuring more vocals and guitar than our previous records,” says John Averill, founding member and band leader.

It’s also the first record under the name MarchFourth, and not MarchFourth Marching Band.

Thrill the World Portland

The group dance, inspired by the Michael Jackson hit “Thriller,” takes place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Irving Park, Northeast Seventh Avenue and Fremont Street. Practices have been held, and there also is an instructional video on YouTube to prepare for the dance; see www.youtube.com/user/NESSENS. For info, see the event’s Facebook page.
