‘Art Hour’

A new art series debuted last week for people at ... Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

“In the spirit of the celebration of every life,” organizers say, the series and the retreat-like setting at Skyline Memorial have been paired, in part to show how Skyline Memorial can be used as a gallery, a studio or a place of learning.

Events take place the second Friday of each month (it started last Friday), continuing 6-8 p.m. Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 11 at Skyline Memorial, 4101 S.W. Skyline Blvd. Guests can meet artists and musicians. To RSVP for the next event, call Skyline Memorial at 503-292-6611.

“We believe in inviting the community to enjoy Skyline Memorial’s inspirational vistas and statuary,” says Rachel Fox, manager. “The staff at Skyline Memorial Gardens feel as though the tranquility of the location and its expansive vistas to the Coast Range mountains are works of art in itself; we often see people playing musical instruments, sketching and photographing the views.”

Wordstock

Literary Arts released the list of authors that will appear at Wordstock, Nov. 5, at the Portland Art Museum and other nearby venues. It’s a long list, but notable authors attending are Sherman Alexie (“Thunder Boy Jr.”), Colson Whitehead (“The Underground Railroad”), Yaa Gyasi (“Homegoing”), Lindy West (“Shrill”), Jason Reynolds (“Ghost”), Alexander Chee (“The Queen of the Night”) and Angela Palm (“Riverine”). For a complete list, see www.literary-arts.org.

The Doubleclicks news

The Doubleclicks, a geeky/feminist musical duo of sisters Angela and Aubrey Webber, have formed their own record label (Doubleclicks Records) and put out their first album for Lucia Fasano on the label, thanks to a Kickstarter campaign. “Radio Silence” was funded 228 percent — the Webbers wanted to raise $3,000, and landed $6,858.

The Doubleclicks use crowdfunding and book gigs at nontraditional venues, such as Oct. 15 with Fasano for the “Radio Silence” CD release party at Books with Pictures, a new Portland comic book shop (free to attend).

“A lot of ‘making it’ and ‘being discovered’ in the music industry involves putting yourself in a box and trying to do what other people have done,” Angela Webber says. “The Doubleclicks try to avoid this, and so does Lucia Fasano — a comedian, writer, producer, actor and musician all in one.”

The Doubleclicks and Fasano will play gigs in California Sept. 18-21, on their “Snakes on the Radio” tour.

Salmon bake

Care to take a road trip for a taste of some authentic salmon?

The 60th annual Indian-Style Salmon Bake takes place at Depoe Bay City Park, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Pacific salmon is cooked using a traditional technique. The description, courtesy of the organizers:

Before sunrise on the morning of the event, a huge 80-foot fire line is ignited with six cords of fir and three cords of alder. Thousands of pounds of salmon fillets are positioned on the (350 6-foot) alder wood stakes and held in place with cedar strips. The alder stakes are then positioned diagonally over the smoldering fire line, imparting rich flavors to the salmon as they bake to perfection. Each salmon is cooked about 20 minutes on each side.

(Full meals are $27, $25 in advance at Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce, 223 S.W. Highway 101, Suite B, Depoe Bay, and other locations in the town). For more: www.depoebaychamber.org.
