The Portland Ballet

The company and youth ballet academy debut a major piece by Anne Mueller, “Day by Day.” Witty and humorous, it’s choreographed to Mozart’s “Strong Quartet in Bflat Major” to be played by the PSU Orchestra. The Thanksgiving weekend production also reprises “Firebird,” by the company’s artistic adviser, John Clifford.

‘Beauty and the Beast’

The original creators of the Broadway production reunited for the new touring production. It’s directed by Rob Roth and choreographed by Matt West. It’s the story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress and who needs to learn to love and be loved before it’s too late.

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Portland Actors Conservatory puts on Shakespeare’s beloved play, set in Alaska amid snow, northern lights and frosty relationships. “The discord between people has an environmental impact,” says Elizabeth Rothan, director. “The Alaskan setting demonstrates the coldness of the human spirit that can be melted away by love,” adds Tara Spires, who plays Helena.

Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca

White Bird welcomes the authentic flamenco touring company and dancer Soledad Barrio, with dancers, singers and guitarist Salva De Maria. The company will perform “Sombras Sangradas (Sacred Dreams),” displaying its transcendence and deep emotion.

‘The Spin’

The 18th season of BodyVox dance company begins with “The Spin,” by artistic directors Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, a show that blends dance and the spontaneity of improvisation with a game show wheel — audience members take the stage to spin the wheel throughout the show to determine what comes next. There will be 25 possible dances with costumes and dancers ready to go. Funny, theatrical and creative, it’s inspired by the 1986 “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” tour by Elvis Costello.

Spiegelworld’s ‘Empire’

The all-new adult-oriented cirque burlesque show, with its sexy, seductive performers and comedy and music, takes place in a heated tent at the Rose Quarter through December. Characters named Oscar and Fanny are the emcees.

All aboard!

The Columbia Gorge 2015 Model Railroad Show takes place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 28 and 29, at 2505 N. Vancouver Ave. ($7, $3 kids 3-11, www.columbiagorgemodelrailroad club.com). The 4,200-square-foot layout depicts areas between Portland and Hood River.

Zappa Plays Zappa

Dweezil Zappa heads the band that pays tribute to his father, Frank Zappa, and the 40th anniversary of The Mothers of Invention’s “One Size Fits All” album. The band also will play more from Frank Zappa’s vast catalog.

Oregon Trail Trio

Artists Repertory Theatre’s Artists Rep in Concert series presents a night of Appalachian music, featuring Phil and Gayle Neuman and Mick Doherty from The Trail Band. The series is curated by Susannah Mars and is an effort by Artists Rep to integrate music into the company’s emerging ArtsHub.
