Doc spotlight

Portland Film Festival

Besides the 10 documentaries that will be judged at the third annual event, Sept. 1 through 7, there’ll be some other special screenings of documentaries (see portlandfilmfestival.com for more info); “Like Me,” about New York City comedian Micah Sherman’s battle to overcome social anxiety through social media; “The Resurrection of Jake the Snake,” a portrait of wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his addictions; “We are Twisted F***ING Sister,” about the 1980s metal band; and “Mega Summer Hit: A Slam Dunkumentary,” a mockumentary about a social media contest in which the makers struggle to finish the film.

Upcoming event

Local filmmaker Sean Brown debuts his third feature film, “Radio Silence,” 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd.,” followed by a Q&A with Brown and cast members (hollywoodtheatre.org). The film tackles the controversial topic of same-sex domestic violence, through a day in the life of a troubled same-sex couple, Carr and James, and their son, Heath, on the last day of the world — a re-imagining of the “War of the Worlds” broadcast. It was shot in Portland and northern Spain in a collaborative production with Spanish filmmaker Jorge Nunez. The film will premiere in Spain in January.
