Queen of Oz
Made up of vocalist Dorothy Martin, drummer Zac Morris, guitarist Mark Jackson, and bassist Gregg Cash, L.A.s Dorothy is the Next Big Thing in rock n roll, given theyre loud, swampy, thumpy, bluesy and melodic. Martins voice calls to mind such 90s rockers as Meredith Brooks, and Jackson plays the kind of guitar fans of Jack White and/or Brian May would dig. Heck, you could dig Aerosmith or Mountain as well. Catch them opening for neo-soul artist Miguel.
Miguel, Dorothy, 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, Roseland Theater, 8 N.W. Sixth Ave.
All ages. $29.50 to $45. Info: www.roselandpdx.com

Sagar shaker
Homeshake is the Montreal-based project of Peter Sagar, former guitarist for indie rocker Mac DeMarco. Sagar recently released his second album Midnight Snack, which features his new single Heat, a 70s-soul-meets-21st-century-techno tune perfectly made for slow-dancing with or without your partner. Since leaving DeMarcos band to focus on his own tunes, Sagar has become sort of a Jonathan Richman of R&B, creating sexy slacker music, for people whose emotional needs just cant be met by Tinder, Tumblr and Twitter.
Homeshake, Sheer Agony, 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, Mississippi Studios, 3939 N. Mississippi Ave. $10. Info: 503-288-3895, www.mississippistudios.com.

The many moves of Morvan
Laurie Morvan plays guitar like a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy, with a wee bit of Bonnie Raitt thrown in. Her voice sometimes sounds like Marcia Ball, occupying a space between blues shouters and more classically pop-sounding singers. A guitar heroine in an age when guitar-centric blues rock has been pretty much pushed off the airwaves, heres hoping well hear more of Morvan on your local blues radio show or, better yet, live, where you can spill your thoughts to your fellow patrons as you also spill their beers.
Laurie Morvan, 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, Duffs Garage, 2530 N.E. 82nd Ave. $10. Info: 503-234-2337, www.duffsgarage.com.
Have guitar, will travel
Keith Greeningers tunes have earned him top songwriting awards at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, The Kerrville Folk Festival, and The Napa Valley Folk Festival. A longtime folk and Americana favorite, he looks like a less beat up Jeff Bridges and his voice is just a bit husky in a John Hiatt kind of way. His compositions have as much soul as they do grit, and hes tackled subjects from how high tech transformed California to how stories can transform a listener. His seventh CD, Soul Connection features Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne, as well as Hutch Hutchinson and Ricky Fataar from the Bonnie Raitt Band as well as Grammy winner Randy Ray Mitchell, whos worked with Warren Zevon.
Keith Greeninger, 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, OConnors Vault, 7850 S.W. Capitol Highway. $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
