The Bite of Oregon
The largest culinary event in the state usually draws around 50,000 fans of food and drink.
New this year is the Plates for the People series, which gives attendees the opportunity to sample more than 40 specially crafted plates from each of the participating restaurants for $5 and under; you can sample them before committing to the main dish. Therell be lots of beer, wine, cider and spirits, including from SE Wine Collective. Music includes Nu Schooz and the New Iberians.

Providence Bridge Pedal
The multibridge bicycle ride for all ages takes place Sunday, Aug. 9, and its part of the bigger celebration of the opening of the Tilikum Crossing. Bicyclists can ride across it, and then the general public will be allowed to cross it in the afternoon, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. (Its set to open Sept. 12). The bridge pedal features rides of three to 37 miles, as well as a six-mile walk. For info and registration: blog.bridge pedal.com. The Providence Bridge Pedal Health and Wellness Expo will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the east end of the Tilikum Crossing on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Alberta Street Fair
The event features entertainment, music, vendors and food and drink for all ages. It kicks off with a childrens parade at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at Northeast 15th Avenue and Alberta Street, and ends at the center stage at Northeast 21st.

Its Playwrights Wests fourth full production, a world-premiere play by Claire Willett, directed by Stephanie Mulligan, and put on in association with CoHo Productions. Its about a little girl who asks big questions of the universe in her diary to a long-dead scientist, beginning a dialogue. Says Willett: Its a play about science, religion, fathers and daughters, sex, creationism, and the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.
