Doc spotlight

“Finding Normal”

It’s Brian Lindstrom’s 2007 documentary about the difficulty of overcoming addiction and the dynamic within Portland’s Central City Concern. It will be screened along with “Mothering Inside,” the 30-minute examination of the Family Preservation Project and its effectiveness at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, which the state plans to phase out. Lindstrom will be in attendance, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Whitsell Auditorium, 1219 S.W. Park Ave. ($9, $8 students, $6 children, www.nwfilm.org).

• The OPB Independent Film Festival is a curated selection from the POV and Independent Lens libraries. A different movie will air each weeknight at 10 p.m., Aug. 10 through 28, and culminates with the local series “Oregon Lens” that showcases Northwest filmmakers (10 p.m. Aug. 24 through 28). The film festival lineup: “Guilty Pleasures,” Aug. 10; “Twin Sisters,” Aug. 11; “Little White Lie,” Aug. 12; NASCAR documentary by Marshall Curry, Aug. 13; “Jiro Dreams of Sushi,” Aug. 14; “Beauty is Embarrassing,” Aug. 17; “Brooklyn Castle,” Aug. 18; “The Genius of Marian,” Aug. 19; “Park Avenue,” Aug. 20; “The Trials of Muhammad Ali,” Aug. 21. • The eighth annual Columbia Gorge International Film Festival runs Aug. 6 through 15, with filmmaker camping, whitewater rafting, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, live music, comedians, outdoor screenings, screenplay readings and workshops. It opens with “The Incredible Adventures of Jojo (and his annoying little sister, Avila),” 6 p.m. Aug. 6 at Washburn Auditorium in Washougal, Wash., followed by live music and the local film “Death on a Rock” by Scott Ballard. Outdoor screenings will be at Angaelica Farms in Washougal, and there’ll be events at other venues as well. There’ll be about 250 films and screenplays from more than 30

“Death on a Rock,” by the Portland-based Ballard, has played in four festivals since its release in April and has earned some acclaim. It’s Ballard’s third feature film. His second, “A Standing Still,” played at 15 festivals and won numerous awards. He’s the founder of the Great Notion Filmmaker’s Collective, a collection of indie filmmakers in Portland.
